This Giclee Print, titled ‘Driftwood’, is a portrait that captures, for me, the essence of inspiration and beauty emanating from something that’s no longer living. 

The idea for this piece came to me when my partner and I were visiting a beach town. We would walk up and down where the water met the sand and collect shells and pieces of driftwood.

Driftwood is beautiful, but all it is, is dead wood that has been formed by water and sand. By the sands of time, I suppose. Each piece has a story, a history.

I’ve been inspired by the AIDS crisis of the 1980s for most of my life. A horrifically traumatizing time where we lost a generation of queer voices. I believe so deeply that it’s up to our generation to tell our stories, our history.

Having the piece of nature be the focal point, with the male form as a backdrop, is a beautifully poignant reminder that we are responsible for shaping history and giving a voice to those who are no longer with us in our pursuit of equity and inclusion.
